Ingredients

Toffee Base
  • Saltine crackers, about 40 crackers
  • Unsalted butter, 1 cup (226 g)
  • Brown sugar, 1 cup (200 g)
Chocolate Layer
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips, 2 cups (340 g)
Toppings
  • Chopped nuts, optional, 1 cup (120 g)
  • Sea salt, optional, 1 teaspoon (5 g)
  • Festive sprinkles, optional
  • Crushed candy canes, optional

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Place the saltine crackers across the baking sheet in one even layer.
Cooking
  1. Combine butter and brown sugar in a heavy-bottom saucepan over medium heat, stirring continuously until melted together, then simmer the mixture gently for 3 minutes.
  2. Spread the hot butter and brown sugar toffee over the crackers, covering the surface evenly.
  3. Bake the coated crackers at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes, until the toffee is bubbling, and monitor closely to avoid burning.
Topping
  1. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and distribute the chocolate chips over the warm toffee.
  2. Wait 2-3 minutes for the chocolate to soften, then spread it into an even layer.
  3. Add optional chopped nuts, sea salt, festive sprinkles, or crushed candy canes over the soft chocolate layer.
Chilling
  1. Refrigerate the candy for 1-2 hours until the layers are completely firm.
  2. Break the chilled Christmas crack into irregular pieces and store in an airtight container.

Notes

Chill completely before breaking the candy apart so the toffee and chocolate layers set cleanly.
