Method
Preparation
- Heat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Place the saltine crackers across the baking sheet in one even layer.
Cooking
- Combine butter and brown sugar in a heavy-bottom saucepan over medium heat, stirring continuously until melted together, then simmer the mixture gently for 3 minutes.
- Spread the hot butter and brown sugar toffee over the crackers, covering the surface evenly.
- Bake the coated crackers at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes, until the toffee is bubbling, and monitor closely to avoid burning.
Topping
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and distribute the chocolate chips over the warm toffee.
- Wait 2-3 minutes for the chocolate to soften, then spread it into an even layer.
- Add optional chopped nuts, sea salt, festive sprinkles, or crushed candy canes over the soft chocolate layer.
Chilling
- Refrigerate the candy for 1-2 hours until the layers are completely firm.
- Break the chilled Christmas crack into irregular pieces and store in an airtight container.
Notes
Chill completely before breaking the candy apart so the toffee and chocolate layers set cleanly.
